Menin Gate
Menin Gate are in the Belgian town of Ypres. This monument is dedicated to soldiers of the Entente, who died here in the battles of the First World War.
In the olden days around the town of Ypres were erected walls. Through the gate with the same name was a road to the city changes. In the battle for the city of Ypres, which took place close to all the fortifications were thoroughly destroyed. Project modern Menin Gate were built by architect Reginald Bloomfield in 1921. On top of the arch gate sits stone lion - symbol of Great Britain and Flanders, the historical region of Belgium. On the walls hang signs inside the arch on which are inscribed the names of missing soldiers.
In 1927 was inaugurated today Menin Gate. Since the opening there was a tradition - every night at exactly 20:00 firehouse trumpeter plays at the gates of the last post.
