Flemish Béguinages
Béguinages settlement called single women in Flanders and the Netherlands. Women represented Béguines religious movement that arose in the 12th century in Europe. Members of the communities were women who were almost monastic lifestyle. It also took wives of the Crusaders, who could leave for the return of her husband with a great campaign. Women living in small houses, resembling a hostel.
In the Belgian town of Diksmuide Beguinage was founded in the 13th century. It existed at the expense of wealthy citizens. In gratitude for the shelter women dedicated themselves to public affairs - brought orphans, cared for the sick and elderly.
Nowadays, many béguinages steel museum complex. Flemish béguinages were included in the list of UNESCO World facilities in 1998.
